I just received my Butterfly and am working through the exercises in the book "C Programming for Microcontrollers" by Joe Pardue. I have wired a DB9 plug and have configured the Br@y++Terminal Program. I have tested the RS232 connection and have made sure that was working properly per the instructions. I can see the ??????? when I hold down the joy stick and am able to write my Name to the LCD. I made sure to "disconnect" the terminal software to free up the active port. I have compiled the test program and created my hex file for submission. I have accessed the bootloader three ways. First by shutting down the Butterfly and turning it back on without pushing the joystick forward in the up position to initialize the AVR programming. Second I have shorted the RST and GND on the ISP. Third I have used the bootloader jump feature on the Butterfly supplied by Atmel. I open the AVR Studio 4 Program and locate the .cof file. I activate the AVR Simulator with ATmega169 and click finish. I push down the joy stick and hold it while I go to the AVR Studio 4 "AVR Prog". I always get the same message: “No supported board found! AVR program version 1.37".

I thought that since my board is relatively new, that maybe I needed an update version of AVR Studio 4. I have loaded a new version, went through the same procedure and get the same error message just a more resent version number.

I am open to whatever suggestions you might have at this point. Whatever help you can give would be most appreciated. Thanks!

I brought the board into work today. I was using a USB to Serial Cable that I bought from Radio Shack. I was pretty sure I had a real serial cable at work and wanted to try that. I don't have a serial port on my laptop at home. Sure enough the serial cable worked. That got me thinking about the little message when installing ARV Studio 4, The one where it talks about a USB setup in the tools folder. Well, I tried that and I was also able to get the AVR prog... to work and download hex files. It takes a couple tries with the USB to Serial cable, but it seems to work. I thought I would let others know in case anyone else ever runs into the same problem.
